With a background in architecture, I have always been fascinated by chairs. Like buildings, the combination of their structural and practical requirements provides a multitude of opportunities to create beauty. Some of the most iconic modern chairs have in fact been designed by architects, marrying form, function, materials and aesthetic considerations seamlessly to create iconic pieces of furniture.
I completed my training at the Oxford School of Upholstery and have been sourcing and refurbishing salvaged chairs ever since. My time spent working on buildings has provided me with the additional skills needed to not only refurbish the upholstery but also to repair and refinish the chair frames as necessary. I use the most sustainable methods I can while ensuring that I stay true to the intrinsic style and design of each piece. Sustainability scores are provided with each piece to properly appraise customers of the environmental costs and impacts of the work undertaken.
The fabric used in the refurbishment can have a significant impact on the appearance of the piece. I love creating a vibrant marriage between the form of the chairs and the fabrics that dress them. I try and use fabric remnants or roll ends in an effort to prevent these from being thrown away or discarded. This makes sourcing suitable fabric much more challenging but also very much more rewarding.
I believe that we need to value things enough to cherish them and care for them. Not only does this ensure their longevity and reduce waste, but it is also I believe, good for our souls. I truly hope that you will find as much pleasure in these chairs as I do.
